The High Life

Peering down at Quito from the eastern side of the Pichinchi Volcano gave me a new appreciation for the altitude. At 14000ft, the short hike from the TeleferiQo (a gondola) to several lookout points was quite challenging. Small hills in the path left my heart pounding and we found ourselves stopping frequently to catch our breaths.

The weather did not cooperate and most of the views were replaced by clouds.  From time to time, the clouds would part and we could see Quito nearly four thousand feet below.

The terrace of our hostel is 4750ft below at 9250ft of elevation. Quito is the second highest capital city in the world at 9300ft. It is second only to it's southern neighbor in the Andean mountain range, La Paz, Bolivia.  Hopefully, I'll be slightly more acclimatized by the time I write you from La Paz :-)

  1. Wow those are some cool views. If you were flying that high you'd legally have to be on oxygen. Did you guys meet the people in the one picture on your trip?

  2. I sure wish we had oxygen! Andrew didn't post it, but he also has a picture of me clinging to a post for dear life, trying to catch my breath after taking about 3 uphill steps!

The folks in the picture with us are fellow travelers that we met at our hostel - a super fun brother/sister duo from Florida!
